The Archeparchy of Pittsburgh was established on September 1, 1924 as the first Byzantine Catholic exarchate in the United States. The center, originally in New York, was moved to Munhall, Pa. in 1925. In 1963, it was raised to the status of an eparchy (diocese). In 1969, the Byzantine Metropolitan Province and Archeparchy of Munhall were established. The Archeparchy was renamed the Metropolitan Archeparchy of Pittsburgh in 1977. The Chancery office is located on the North Side in Pittsburgh. Its center, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, is in Munhall, Pa.
The Byzantine Catholic (Ruthenian) Metropolitan Church of Pittsburgh, USA is the only sui iuris (self-governing) Eastern Catholic Church in the United States ; it is directly under the authority of the pope. The Metropolitan Church consists of the Archeparchy of Pittsburgh and three eparchies - Passaic , Parma and Phoenix .
Serving over 58,000 faithful, the Archeparchy of Pittsburgh is comprised of 75 churches, 2 missions and 3 communities in seven states: Louisiana, Ohio (eastern), Oklahoma, Pennsylvania (western), Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia.
There are 55 active priests and 21 deacons in eight Protopresbyterates (Deaneries).
