The Archeparchy of Pittsburgh was established on September 1, 1924 as the first Byzantine Catholic exarchate in the United States. The center, originally in New York, was moved to Munhall, Pa. in 1925. In 1963, it was raised to the status of an eparchy (diocese). In 1969, the Byzantine Metropolitan Province and Archeparchy of Munhall were established. The Archeparchy was renamed the Metropolitan Archeparchy of Pittsburgh in 1977. The Chancery office is located on the North Side in Pittsburgh. Its center, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, is in Munhall, Pa.
The Archeparchy of Pittsburgh is comprised of 84 parishes and two missions currently encompassing six states: Louisiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia.
There are 65 active clergy in eight Protopresbyterates (Deaneries).
