In 1949 Rev. John Bajcura received permission to build two mission churches from St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church in Homer City, Pa.  Holy Cross Church was built in Coal Run and St. Jude Thaddeus Church was built in Ernest.  When the churches were completed, he would celebrate Liturgy one Sunday a month in each of the churches.  On Sundays when Liturgy was not celebrated in their home church, parishioners would attend either the Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Ernest or travel to St. Mary Church in Homer City.

In 1961 permission was given for a parish rectory to be constructed.   Prior to this time, the pastor resided with a local parish family.

The parish was growing and became more involved.  Seasonal parties, religious instruction, dinners and picnics were held for the young and old parishioners.  The St. Jude’s Ladies Guild worked hard making pirohi to pay off the rectory mortgage.  Later activities included charitable service during the great Johnstown Flood and the establishment of a scholarship fund for college-aged students.  Presently, the parish members also contribute to food and clothing drives.

In 1973 painting, carpeting, new altars, and a breezeway between the church and rectory were completed to enhance the property.   In more recent years, renovations to the rectory were made and a shrine to the Mother of God and St. Jude was built in the breezeway.
