The Byzantine Catholic Mission of St. Nicholas had its beginnings as an educational endeavor. In November 1976, Father Francis Twardzik, SDB, celebrated the Byzantine Divine Liturgy at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans to educate students in the diversity of the Catholic Church.

Realizing there was great interest and there existed a need to serve members of the Byzantine Church who had settled in the area, Archbishop Hannan gave Father Twardzik permission to celebrate the Divine Liturgy once a month.

In 1978 Father Ellis DePriest received bi-ritual faculties from Rome and permission to serve the Ruthenian church from Metropolitan Stephen J. Kocisko of Pittsburgh. Archbishop Kocisko also gave permission to Father DePriest to continue his monthly service to the Byzantine Catholics of the area.

Divine Liturgies continued to be celebrated at Notre Dame Seminary Chapel until September 1981, at which time the celebration was moved to the Dominican College Chapel on St. Charles Avenue. In 1982 permission was also received from Archbishop Joseph Tawil of the Melkite Eparchy of Newton, MA for the community to serve the needs of the Melkite faithful of the area.

In October 1984, the community once again relocated to its present home at the St. John Prep building.

In recognition of the growth of the small but vibrant community, Metropolitan Stephen Kocisko formally raised the community to the status of mission, under the patronage of St. Nicholas of Myra.

The congregation was blessed by a pastoral visit in July 1995 by Metropolitan Judson. Throughout his visit he gave encouragement to the community both through his words and by his presence.

Today, in addition to Father DePriest there is one additional priest and two deacons who assist in the service to the people of St. Nicholas. In March 1999, property was purchased by the archdiocese at 2435 South Carrolton Avenue in New Orleans and the congregation relocated to a worship site of its own.
