Nativity of Our Lady Church, the official title but one not commonly used, was established in September 1932 with episcopal approval. Desiring a parish closer to their homes, the faithful gathered in their first place of worship, a store front in a building on Greenfield Avenue known as Gutherie’s Hall. The first pastor of Nativity Church was Rev. Theophile Zatkovich, chancellor of the Pittsburgh Exarchate.

Wishing to have a church of their own, they purchased property at 342 Greenfield Avenue. A foundation was dug on this site, and the basement church was blessed on November 30, 1933.

Later, the parishioners agreed the basement church should be sold and new lots purchased at a more suitable site. They located property on Beechwood Boulevard at the Greenfield Bridge, which proved to be a more appropriate site for the growing parish family. Construction of the new church and rectory got underway mid August of 1948.

The cornerstone for the new edifice was solemnly blessed November 28, 1948. Soon after the work on the basement of the new building was completed, the old structure on Greenfield Avenue was sold. The first Divine Liturgy at the church on Beechwood Boulevard was celebrated on March 26, 1949.

The completed structure was dedicated on October 23, 1949, the realization of a dream for the congregation. Now the faithful could worship God in their new above-ground temple, and a resident pastor could administer to the needs of the people.

Although some thirty men are remembered as the founders of the parish, the women have always played an important role. In the 1930’s women collected monthly dues from parishioners, a ladies club was organized to hold raffles and bingos, a ladies sodality was formed in 1940, and in 1956, a parish pirohi project was initiated which continues to this day.

In 1970 an icon screen and baldacchino were installed. On June 6, 1971 the renovated church was blessed and the mortgage burned.

Nativity of Our Lady Church is served by the resident pastor of St. John Chrysostom, also located in Greenfield. The faithful may now worship together again in either church.
