In 1904 word of a newly forming Byzantine Catholic parish spread up and down the valleys and hills of Northeastern Cambria County. The people--mostly miners--came on foot, by wagon, and by railroad to the station at South Fork and walked up the hill in the “Fifficktown” area to the site which would become St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church.

The parish was chartered May 14, 1905 under the leadership of Rev. Nicholas Podhoreczky. The church building was built that very same year and dedicated by Bishop Soter Ortinsky in 1907. In the early days of the parish, Bishop Ortinsky maintained his official residence at the rectory for almost a year.

In following years South Fork became the center of outreach for those who were traveling long, hard miles to attend church. Mission parishes were started, first in Beaverdale, then Dunlo, Portage, and Nanty Glo. Eventually these missions were designated parishes.
